Aylesbury’s MP has warned that the town could be left without a main Post Office for around six months after the High Street branch shut its doors. The counter, which operated inside the TGJones store at 25-29 High Street, closed on 18 August as part of a wave of closures triggered by TGJones’s financial restructuring — a shake-up threatening up to 60 Post Office counters across former WH Smith stores nationwide.
The concern centres on the gap before any replacement opens. The Post Office has said it wants to restore a branch as soon as possible, but acknowledges that opening a replacement typically takes around six months, leaving residents — particularly elderly and vulnerable customers who rely on the counter for cash, bill payments and benefits — facing a lengthy stretch with no town-centre service through the autumn and into the new year. Aylesbury’s MP has urged the Post Office to move faster and find a new operator without delay, stressing how central the branch is to the community and the pressure its loss places on people who cannot easily travel further afield.
