Bucks libraries to swap plastic for 100% biodegradable membership cards

Buckinghamshire libraries are switching to “100% biodegradable” membership cards in a move to cut waste, costs and environmental impact. Cabinet member for culture and leisure Cllr Peter Brazier said the greener cards — expected in the coming months — will be issued to new members and to existing borrowers who need a replacement, once current stock has been used up. They will keep the familiar library card designs.
Cllr Brazier said the new cards could last several years if looked after, with users advised to keep them dry, flat and out of excessive heat and sunlight. Lost or damaged cards can still be replaced for the usual small charge, and anyone who would rather not carry a physical card at all can use the digital barcode in the free Spydus Library app, which works at enquiry desks, self-service kiosks and for Library Flex access during unstaffed hours.
