From leukaemia diagnosis to the podium: Aylesbury man wins four at Transplant Games

Nick Barnard, 35, from near Aylesbury, has come home with four medals from this year’s British Transplant Games, held in Sheffield from 6 to 9 August. Diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in May 2018 at just 27, Nick began chemotherapy immediately and was told a stem cell transplant offered his best chance against the cancer returning. That September he received a transplant from a donor found through the Anthony Nolan register — the charity that has facilitated more than 30,000 stem cell transplants worldwide since 1974. Now thriving after a gruelling recovery, Nick used the Games — which drew 2,500 participants across 26 sports — to thank donors and show just how life-changing a transplant can be.
