The Rise of the ‘Cheeky Half’: Why Midweek Drinkers Are Downsizing
The traditional pint is facing stiff competition during the working week, as new transaction data reveals a massive surge in popularity for the ‘cheeky half’.
According to payments company Square, sales of smaller beer servings on Wednesdays have jumped by 27% over the past year, with Mondays and Tuesdays seeing increases of 23% and 20% respectively. Londoners are leading the charge, accounting for 44% of all smaller servings nationwide.
The shift is largely driven by after-work drinkers seeking a balance between socializing and staying sharp for the office the next day, with the peak window for these restrained orders falling between 5pm and 8pm. Experts suggest the trend is fueled by a mix of health consciousness and rising costs—with the average pint now costing £5.91. Drinkaware reports that over 90% of drinkers now employ moderation techniques, making the midweek half-measure a sensible choice for the modern pub-goer.
